Magnetic Flow Meter
What is a Magnetic Flow Meter?
By far the most commonly used flow meter in today’s water applications, A mag meter, short for magnetic flow meter, is a type of flow meter used to measure the flow rate of a liquid, typically a conductive liquid, by using Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. It consists of a pipe or tube through which the liquid flows, and sensors called electrodes that are placed on the sides of the pipe, normally flush to avoid flow disruption.
When the liquid flows through the pipe, a magnetic field is generated by passing an electric current through the electrodes. As the conductive liquid flows through the magnetic field, a voltage is induced across the electrodes, which is proportional to the velocity of the liquid.
The mag meter then determines the flow rate based on this voltage signal. Mag meters are widely used in many industries such as water treatment, wastewater management, chemical processing, and food and beverage production, amongst others.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Buying a Magnetic Flow Meter?
The main questions which need to be considered before selecting a magnetic flow meter:
- Is the fluid conductive or water based?
- Is the fluid or slurry abrasive?
- Do you require an integral display or remote display?
- Do you require an analogue output?
- What is the minimum and maximum flow rate for the Magmeter?
- What is the minimum and maximum process pressure?
- What is the minimum and maximum process temperature?
- Is the fluid chemically compatible with the Magflo flow meter wetted parts?
- What is the size of the pipe?
- Is the pipe always full?
