The OVAL Flowmate gear flow meter is used to monitor engine performance and give an indication of engine fuel economy on a small, lightweight, diesel aircraft engine. The test rig is fitted with two meters, one meter on the feed line and the second measuring return fuel flow on the return line. Fuel consumption is found by taking the difference between the two meter readings. Because the return fuel is hotter than the fuel fed to the engine (and will therefore have expanded), the metering system is designed to make a temperature correction by incorporating two temperature sensors and using the fuel’s coefficient of thermal expansion.
